The Lys at Warneton. As can be seen, it was a much more formidable obstacle than the Ypres-Comines Canal (opposite).

The Ypres–Comines Canal at Comines. Although the banks have been tidied up, the photograph gives an idea of the state of the Canal for much of its length; from the descriptions given in war diaries, it was much the same in 1940.
